Since launching our new Job Alerts feature on EmploymentGuide.com, at our job fairs we have been offering everybody a chance to sign up to receive jobs via their email address.
So after you fill out that little piece of paper giving us permission to sign you up to the industries you designated, I go through and start the process of signing all 500 or more of you up. Recently I had the opportunity to sign up hundreds, maybe even thousands of people from Charlotte, Charleston, and Panhandle Florida area. Most of you made it a very boring process with normal, professional email addresses. However, there were a few of you out there that gave me a moment of entertainment with your very unique and creative email addresses.
While I appreciated having a little entertainment to a data entry task, I felt the need to express that employers do look at your email address. So to Baby_Phat, Crazy_Monkey_Man2000 and others please be sure to think about how you are presenting yourself. Now, granted, maybe this is not the same email that you are using on your resume in which case I wouldn't worry so much. But for those of you out there who are using these types of addresses on your resume or job applications you might want to rethink it! While your email address is a small detail there is no such thing as an unimportant detail on your resume. This could be keeping you from getting the job you want.
With the number of free email services out there from Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail and more there's no reason to have a professional email address. Make an email address with your first and last name. Or just your last name. You don't have to give it out anywhere else. You can probably even set up that email to forward to your Cutie_Pie78536 account so that you won't have to sign into a separate account to view your emails.
