Recession Proof Jobs: Employment When Economy Slows

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

I'm currently contributing to BrazenCareerist.com a blog aggregator of right now 50 young professionals talking about their careers, lives and how to succeed at both. I found a post on Blue Steps blog listing the top 25 careers to pursue in a recession. Here's what they suggested:

  1. Health Care
  2. Energy
  3. Education
  4. Utilities
  5. International Business
  6. Public Safety
  7. Funerals
  8. Accounting
  9. Federal Government
  10. Pharmaceuticals
  11. Sales
  12. Military
  13. Gambling
  14. Alcohol
  15. Politics
  16. Skilled Services
  17. Debt Management
  18. Consulting
  19. Bankruptcy Law
  20. Government Contracting
  21. Food
  22. Beauty, Health and Erotic Services
  23. Debt Collection
  24. Ultraluxury Items
  25. Multifaceted Careers for example online income, freelancing and investing.
Some of the reasoning behind these careers is that these are things that people - regardless of how hard times get - people need these things. One thing too to keep in mind is that as Blue Steps says:

While recessions hit some sectors hard, others go on like clockwork — or even experience growth. So whether you’re hunting for a job or still feeling ostensibly secure, now is a good time to evaluate your options and consider one of the aforementioned recession-proof careers.
